Goose Island Field Trip!

Today we went to Goose Island to look at and learn about fish found in the Mississippi River!

Stunning the fish using a small electric shock!

How does form follow function?

We also learned about the history of mussels and their use by humans!

What have we been up to this month?!

As the hustle and bustle of the first few weeks of school is finally winding down I hope to continue to update pictures more often! Check out what we've been up to since the first day of school!

First few weeks...

On the first day of school I put the kids to the test and challenged them to create a structure using 8 - 3X5 notecards and 12 inches of tape that would hold as many text books as possible!

The winning team was able to stack 24 books on their structure!
We got to break school rules and chew gum to test our knowledge of and ability to use the steps of the scientific method!

In grammar we learned the importance of building a strong paragraph by comparing the construction of a wall to the construction of a paragraph!

Last week we went on our first field trip! We worked with some future teachers from UW-L to learn some math skills and to help rock the trails at the Myrick Hixon EcoPark!

How many 7th graders does it take to push a wheelbarrow?!
In science, we looked at the building blocks of cells and observed some chemical reactions to study lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins!

Each month students will compete in a science challenge!

September: Potato Chip Challenge - Engineering challenge to design a package that will protect a potato chip while being sent through the mail so that it arrives at its destination undamaged.

Congrats to the winners!!!
