Mayo Clinic - Infection Control

On Thursday we visited the Mayo clinic and learned all about the history of surgery and current methods for infection control.

We learned about how science has changed since the 1670's from the first use of pain relieving medication to the use of tourniquets during wartime amputations. We learned about the scientists who influenced these discoveries and how they have helped transform scientific medicine to what it is today.

"For centuries, surgery dealt mainly with wounds of battle or daily life. War is good for surgery science if nothing else."

We watched a video of Dr. Huiras completing a surgery to patch a neck artery and removing an appendix.

We learned about how doctors and nurses keep the operating room sterile during surgery by wearing masks and gowns.

We learned the proper and most effective way to wash our hands and prevent the spread of infection. Then the nurses put us to the test to see how well we did!

We entered a negative pressure room where a patient with Tuberculosis (TB) would stay.

Then learned how to set a heart monitor for when a patient comes to the hospital with symptoms of a heart attack - something nurses do everyday!

Terrell made the news!

Recently in Medical Partnership!

It's been a long time since I've updated the blog! We've been very busy! Check out what we've been up to!

For the last two weeks we have been collaborating with the 7th graders in the Community Connections pod on debates. The students had to debate on the topics of animal testing, deer hunting, crane hunting, and wolf hunting.

A group of students debating on the topic of animal testing.
Last Friday we visited Lanesboro, MN to see their version of a Christmas Carol. Before the performance some of the actors came to visit Lincoln and gave us a short preview of the show!

Introducing us to the many characters in a Christmas Story.

They showed us some acting exercises the actors used while creating scenes for a Christmas Carol.

On Friday, Lincoln had its second mixer!

While I was DJing I left Aiden in charge of my camera... and I got a lot of pictures of... Aiden.

7th graders, you lucked out this time, there won't be any embarrassing pictures posted on the blog!

Check out all of the pictures on the Shutterfly account and stay tuned for more pictures after our field trip to Mayo on Thursday!
